I started a CKD (Cyclical Ketogenic Diet) program on Monday. This is a weight loss program that keeps you at < 20g of carbs for 5-6 days and then you carb up for 1-2 days. This is a good program for weightlifters, as the carb up day(s) gives you a couple of days at the beginning of the week with enough energy to lift.
Honestly, I do this because my will power has eroded and with two really young children in the house, there are always snacks around and it's tough for me to stay disciplined. I have done this twice before with great success, once going from 212 to 178 in 4 months and then last year, I went from 196 to 182 in 6 weeks. I am 41 years old, by the way and had been extremely active in weightlifting and competetive sports until I developed arthritis in my knee about 3 years ago. I've had 3 knee surgeries since and have not been nearly as active.
I weighed 197 Monday morning and my goal is to get down to about 180 by July 4th. It's probably a stretch, but i'm going to try it. I'm already down to 190 in just 4 days, which means I was probably carrying a lake's worth of water.
My approach to this is that Mon-Fri I eat <20g of carbs each day. I lift Mon, Tues and Wed and then I do strengthening work on my legs on Thursday. I do anywhere from 25-40 minutes of cardio each morning, Monday to Friday and then I do what's called a depletion workout on Saturday morning before I start eating carbs. The depletion workout is low weight, very high reps, little rest.
This diet is not a lifestyle change for me. I just want to lose fat. When I did this program the first time, I kept the weight off for 3 years, but that's because I was playing baseball and working out 5 days a week. I started to put weight back on because I hurt my knee and couldn't work out for months.
Once I get to my target weight, I will go back a 5 day a week workout program and I will eat sensibly, but i'm not a bodybuilder, so i'm not looking to stay ripped all year round. With the amount of cardio I do, i'm pretty much able to eat whatever I want once I get down to that weight.
I'll update this thread with my progress a few days a week. If anyone has questions or comments, please feel free to post.
